How to declutter your home before a move

Preparing to move home can feel overwhelming, especially if you have a lot of possessions or if it has been many years since you last moved. Planning for the move by decluttering your home will not only make packing much easier but actually save you money (you will not be paying to move the items you no longer need).

Tracy Ross from Blissfully Organised has written these top 3 tips to get you started:

1. Give yourself plenty of time

I recommend that you start decluttering 6-8 weeks before your move date. This will give you enough time to review all the items in your home and decide what to keep and what to purge. Looking through memories/souvenirs from your past life can often take longer than you think.

2. Have a plan

I suggest that you start with the rooms that you use the least but are often full of things that you haven’t reviewed for some time. This is usually one or all of the following – Loft, Basement and Garage. Do not move onto the next room until you have completed the current room that you are decluttering.

3. Stay Focused

In the current room that you are decluttering create 5 piles – Those items to be packed to move to your new home, those items that are currently in the wrong room, items to give to charity, items to sell and items for the rubbish. Any items that you are planning to throw away or donate should be removed from your home straight away. I recommend that my clients put the unwanted items in their car and drop off at the tip or charity shop the same day

We saw the busiest-ever start to a new year for the housing market in 2022 and there’s no sign of it slowing down as we head into the busy spring home-selling season. Selling your home can be as daunting a move as when you first bought it. Selling and buying another property at the same time can be even more stressful and complicated. It feels like there has never been such a collective yearning for balmy spring and summer months and the nascent interior trends for spring/summer 2022 are a reflection of that hope for literal and metaphorical sunnier days. Giving your garden some TLC is certainly worth doing if you're putting your house on the market. A few small changes could make your outdoor space more attractive to potential buyers and could subsequently help to sell your house faster. The housing market heatwave across Great Britain continues this month as temperatures soar up and down the country. Asking prices have hit a record-high for the sixth month in a row rising by 0.4% (+£1 354) to £369 968. In London the average is now £692 828.
