Why More Over-65s Are Choosing to Stay Put

Moving home isn't always about climbing the property ladder. Sometimes it's about deciding you've already found the place that's right for you.

New research from Dataloft reveals that England's over-65 homeowners are increasingly choosing to remain where they are. Around 58% of homes owned by people aged over 65 are now considered under-occupied, meaning they have one or more spare bedrooms. That's up from 53% just ten years ago, representing around 4.3 million homes across England with unused space.

Home is where the heart is

Perhaps surprisingly, the decision to stay isn't usually driven by a lack of options.

According to the latest English Housing Survey:

• 76% say their current home already meets their needs.
• 73% simply love the area where they live.

After years of building friendships, becoming part of the local community and making memories, it's easy to see why so many people choose to remain in familiar surroundings.

For others, practical considerations also play a part. Around 17% say they stay because their home has been adapted to suit their changing needs, making it both comfortable and convenient.

Downsizing is still part of the picture

While many older homeowners are happy to stay put, others are beginning to think differently about the future.

Among those considering a move, 28% would prefer a smaller home, compared with 24% of homeowners aged 35 to 64 who are typically looking for extra space.

For some, downsizing can reduce maintenance, lower running costs and release equity to support retirement or help family members. The right move looks different for everyone.
