A true national treasure, Sir David Attenborough has spent more than 70 years helping us see the natural world through fresh eyes, and as he celebrates his 100th birthday, it feels like the perfect moment to appreciate the wildlife and green spaces much closer to home, too.
While Attenborough’s documentaries have taken us to jungles, oceans, and deserts around the world, some of the UK’s most important habitats are right on our own doorsteps. In London alone, more than 14,000 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded, proving that even built-up areas can play a hugely important role in supporting biodiversity.
