Alban Day Returns to St Albans with a Spectacular Pilgrimage & Festival
One of St Albans' most colourful and historic events is set to return this summer, bringing music, medieval entertainment and family fun to the city centre.
Alban Day: Pilgrimage & Festival takes place from 10 am to 4 pm on 20th June 2026, with activities centred around the Civic Centre Plaza, St Peter's Street and St Albans Cathedral.
The day begins with the famous Alban Pilgrimage Procession, setting off from St Peter's Church at 11 am. Featuring giant 12-foot puppets, performers and colourful costumes, the procession weaves through the city towards St Albans Cathedral, bringing to life the story of Britain's first saint in a spectacular visual celebration.
Step Back into Medieval St Albans
Throughout the day, visitors can experience what life was like in medieval St Albans through a range of interactive displays and demonstrations, including:
- Medieval pilgrims' games and activities
- Chain maille making demonstrations
- Medieval writing and manuscript workshops
- Apothecary and spice merchant displays
- Holy relic seller experiences
- Talks on medieval medicine, religion and pilgrimage
There will also be plenty of live entertainment, with medieval jesters performing throughout the day, interactive "Fool School" sessions, comic sword-fighting displays and performances retelling the story of St Alban's martyrdom.
Family Fun for All Ages
Families can enjoy a packed programme of free activities, including:
- Free face painting
- Medieval-inspired crazy golf
- Owl displays with expert handlers
- Giant jigsaw puzzles
- Paper rose making workshops
- Collaborative pottery activities with the Dacorum Pottery Society
Live music will keep the atmosphere buzzing throughout the day, while local radio station Mix 92.6 broadcasts live from the festival.
A Celebration of St Albans' Heritage
The festival culminates at St Albans Cathedral, where visitors are welcome to attend the Pilgrimage Eucharist at midday and Pilgrimage Evensong at 4pm.

Please note that the pilgrimage procession will involve temporary rolling road closures through the city centre, with roads reopening once the procession has passed.
